The Drawing Seller

Early in December don’t miss ‘The Drawing Seller’, a ‘pop up’ art exhibition by the artist HUTCH (aka James Hutchinson) situated in The Galley’s Cellar. The show will include a selection of brand new pen and watercolour paintings alongside some older, but previously un-exhibited, works as well as some limited edition HUTCH T-shirts. The majority of the work is unframed, all items are for sale (prices range from £20 – £900), available for collection at the end of the show and 20% of all sales will be donated to the charity Mencap. You will be able to pay for the artwork with cash at The Galley or online at www.byhutch.co.uk.
The exhibition opens with a Private View on December 2nd from 12:00–15:00 and finishes on December 8th 16:00 to coincide with Woodbridge Christmas Market. HUTCH will be present on both the 2nd and 8th. If you haven’t yet seen this artist’s work this is the perfect opportunity. The exhibition will remain on view between the 2nd and 8th during The Galley’s normal opening hours.
HUTCH’s current work is focussed on fusing external observation with internal reflection resulting in images which are refreshingly accessible yet original. While working, the artist muses on titles for the pictures, phrases or single words he evaluates carefully to widen the possible meaning of the piece or narrow the focus. Although only 31, HUTCH is in many ways old school, his art practice blends traditional, self-taught craftsmanship with quirky contemporary imagery. He achieves a pleasing balance between style and substance, successfully paying homage to some of the best art of the past, without being backward looking, clichéd or predictable.
Next summer HUTCH will take up the post of Artist in Residence at Helmingham Hall where he will paint and draw daily in the gardens. This opportunity has been granted to him by Lord and Lady Tollemache and by Ipswich School where HUTCH teaches art.
